6 Office Organization Tips To Implement Today

How do you like to start a typical office day? Do you like to have a cup of coffee in hand and settle in at your desk, open up your computer, and get started? Or, do you like to start your day at home on a conference call and then transition your way to an office? Much of our waking hours are spent at work, and I think it’s important for everyone to have a workspace that sparks creativity and passion instead of stress. Here are 6 office organization tips you can implement today to keep your workspace clutter-free.

Joy check the items that live in your work area

Whether you work from home or in an office, joy checking items that surround you is a great way to start the process of keeping a clutter-free environment. Make sure that you only have what you need to do your work surrounding you. We often have too many books and papers we haven’t referenced for years. By joy checking, your desk will be a welcoming place of efficiency, where you can easily find items of need.

If you love your home office space it will continue to give you the space to focus and feel good about your surroundings. If you work in an office environment, make sure to also joy check the items in your drawers or file cabinet.

Use the KonMari Method™

The KonMari Method™ recommends boxing items in drawers to keep things neat and tidy. This is a great implementation for an office space. At my desk, I organize with two boxes, (1) a small box for personal items like hand cream, chapstick, makeup, feminine care, etc. and (2) another small box for writing tools, stationery, business cards, etc.  Seeing all of your items separated by these boxes in the drawer easily helps you find the tools you need without any extra hassle. This is a perfect re-use tip for your phone and accessories or jewelry.

Organizing trays for your desktop

The use or organizing trays is another convenient way to store and organize your office materials for your desktop. These are containers that essentially sit on your desktop instead of being tucked away in a drawer or cabinet. I like to recommend the Poppin as they have beautiful desktop trays that are affordable and can be found both online or at the Container Store. These trays are great for those with limited storage space and help create more open space.

Share common spaces

Many offices have shared spaces, like kitchen counters, phone booths, meeting rooms, etc. Keep shared spaces clean and free of any personal items to create more open space. Your colleagues will appreciate your effort in keeping these areas organized.

In efforts to create even more open space, suggest group storage areas that are well-marked and have sturdy shelving. If everyone has their own space to manage their own things, keeping an open space is much smoother.

Finish your day by prepping for tomorrow

Leave your desk at the end of the day how you would like to see it at the beginning of the following day.  Personally, I try to stand more at work so I like to leave my desk in its standing position. Similarly, I also clear my desk and make sure all of my items from the day are back in their place. For example, files are put away in their respective place, tech gear is in its tech bag, etc.

Interested in my tech bag? I keep all my cords and wires neatly organized with these leather cable organizers. They are crucial for cord management.

Joy is contagious

Your colleagues may notice how you keep your workspace tidy. I encourage you to share your tidy tips with them, and before you know it, they will also adopt an organized workspace and help maintain organized common spaces. If you work from home, sharing your secrets with your network could also help inspire others to keep a well-organized home office.

I personally love to start off my day with a tidy desk as it helps me to start each day with a clean slate. What is your morning routine? How do you approach your workspace? I would love to hear your feedback so please comment below. For more information on workspace organization, please feel free to email me.
